VS: Describe where you live in Newfoundland. Just kidding….or am I?! The gorgeous, Charis Cotter. It’s an honour for me to introduce you to Charis through the following interview. And it sets her apart because she can quiet a roomful off 50 kids with her storytelling, and she can spook a grown-up (me) with her masterful novel-writing skills. It was pretty much love-at-first-email, and we’ve been close friends since! She’s even braved staying at our house- with the kids and the dog and the wildness – while she was participating at BookFest Windsor! Charis is no stranger to family life, and she knows and writes for children – and she scares them. It’s book launch day for author Charis Cotter! Congratulations Charis, on this your TENTH published book, The Painting! Publisher: Tundra Books, Penguin Random/HouseĬharis and I met while preparing for a panel we were both on at Writers’ Union of Canada conference out east in St.John’s in Newfoundland.

Terrible beasts reside beneath flawless skin. Rich witches in trendy resorts cast evil spells…īeautiful princesses age and wither in sleeping worlds… Like the fabled ruby slippers, there is powerful magic here. Joyce Carol Oates, Gahan Wilson, Gene Wolfe, Tanith Lee, Neil Gaiman these are but a few of the accomplished literary sorcerers who have gathered here to remold our timeless myths into more sensuous and disturbing forms. Now, in their third critically acclaimed collection of original fairy tales for adults, World Fantasy Award winning editors Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling bring us twenty one new stories by some of the top names in literature today. ‘ So begin the classic fairy tales that enthralled and terrified us as children. The first signs, as she identifies them, took place during the 1930s when some wealthy families took umbrage at being accused of causing the financial panic and conservative groups chanted against the Roosevelts in an eerie foreshadow of the 2016 election rallies. Mayer identifies the earliest ferment of “the second gilded age” during a time when there was relative economic equality. Published in 2016, Dark Money examines the deep roots that sprouted the present political environment. In fact, thanks to the reporting of Jane Mayer, among others, acknowledging PACs and other forms of Dark Money in the political discourse has become accepted practically to the point of banality.īut, as Mayer makes clear, the explosion of Dark Money after Citizens United was the culmination of a process, not a new innovation. The normalization of over-the-top spending in political elections has gone hand-in-hand with the changes, particularly in the aftermath of the 2010 Citizens United Supreme Court decision. The evolution, or, as some would call it, the metastatic mutation, of the Republican party is one of the most unescapable facts of US politics in recent memory. Neil frantically searches for his sister and finds her in the ominously-named Room 13. Even though they don't see or hear any ghosts, the experience is intense and frightening. They are accompanied-against Neil and Wesley's will at first-by Bree and Wesley's brother Eric. Excited but not entirely expecting to see a ghost, Neil and his new friend Wesley resolve to see Graylock. Supposedly, if you visit at night, you will hear the ghost of Nurse Janet. Looking for thrills in the sleepy town, someone suggests to Neil that they visit the old abandoned insane asylum, Graylock. After their father left, their mother began to suffer from mental illness and so their aunts, Claire and Anne, took the children in to their home in the town of Hedston. The first part, "Hideaway," begins as brother-and-sister Neil and Bree Cady go to stay at their aunts' house in the wake of their parents' separation. Targeted at young adult readers, the story concerns a haunted insane asylum that attracts the attention of some local kids. The Ghost of Graylock is a 2012 Gothic fiction novel written by the American author Dan Poblocki. The entire book is startlingly heartbreaking. This is where the “magical thinking” title comes from - the idea that Didion can reverse her husband’s death if she tried hard enough, or if she could’ve stopped it, or if she missed a symbol that would’ve warned her. She explores her own self-pity and the irrationality of grief, or trauma in general. She searches for any signs or clues that pointed to her husband’s death, convincing herself she could’ve prevented it. Mary Pearson's vividly drawn characters and masterful writing soar to a new level of sophistication. Set in a near future America, it takes readers on an unforgettable journey through questions of bio-medical ethics and the nature of humanity. She relives the love she shared with her husband and all their memories, positive and negative. This fascinating novel represents a stunning new direction for acclaimed author Mary Pearson. It documents Didion’s emotional process in all its grittiness and honesty. The account begins on the day of John’s death and ends the day after the one-year anniversary of his passing. Only a couple days before his death, their daughter, Quintana, was hospitalized, and Didion is forced to simultaneously grapple with that and her loss. "The Year of Magical Thinking" by Joan Didion is a memoir about Didion’s experience and her grief following the death of her husband, John. The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion Covering decades, Abraham brings a totally different vibe to both the old and younger versions of Salieri, and both work extremely well. What didn't bother me, however, was the performance of F. Normally, I don't mind such a choice in storytelling, but it seemed to bother me this time around. As far as we know, most of the events of the film are highly fictionalized or exaggerated. These events are told in flashbacks by Salieri as he was recently committed to an Insane Asylum after attempted suicide. Of course, Amadeus isn't strictly about Mozart himself, it deals with his "rivalry" with Italian composer, Antonio Salieri and the various trials and tribulations of Mozart's wish to display his talents to the world and particularly, the Roman Emperor. I understand a film about grand-scale music and opera's needs to have a unique identity, but I found Tom Hulce's eccentric title role-performance to lack the human touch. It also comes from the great director behind One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Miles Forman. Winning 8 Oscars in 1985 and numerous other accolades, it's safe to say Amadeus is one of the more beloved films of the 80's. But I never really connected to the characters, and that's where it fails for me. With all its colorful and dazzling visual and audio flare, Amadeus is one for the ages.
